Sydney has many well-known landmarks and exciting places to visit, but it has one jewel that not even many locals know about.
Lane Cove National Park is the closest tourist park to the CBD : just 10km away. It is a 600-hectare sanctuary from the bustle of the city. The Lane Cove River winds through the bushland valley and it is home to an abundance of wildlife.
Families and groups of friends gather there for old-fashioned picnics and a game of cricket or football and couples find a secluded spot for a romantic boat ride. There are 35 picnic sites and boats can be hired at the historic boatshed. There are 40km of designated bushland trails, a wildlife rehabilitation shelter and a pool.
The biggest surprise to many, though, is that there is accommodation in the park.
There are 28 deluxe self-contained ensuite cabins, as well as campervan, caravan, powered and unpowered tent sites.
Family cabins have two bedrooms with queen bed, bunks, two-way bathroom, and separate toilet, equipped kitchen with microwave, lounge, television and reverse cycle air-conditioning. Small cabins have one bedroom with queen bed and the same facilities as family cabins. Both are rated three-and-a-half stars and some have views of the city skyline.
10km from the centre of Sydney.
Lane Cove vehicle entry is $7 for day trippers, and is free if you are staying overnight.
One bedroom cabins start at $121 a night and campsites start at $30 a night. Four person boat hire is $20 an hour or $30 a day. The boat shed is open on weekends and public holidays.
