Manly kayaking with Guy Leech

Thursday, May 18, 2006
Manly is the best-known of Sydney's northern beaches. It's a very cosmopolitan place with restaurants galore, clubs, pubs and a surf beach that stretches from South Steyne through North Steyne to Queenscliff. On the other side is a calm harbour beach with a pool and ferry wharf.

Manly is where seven times Australian Iron Man and marathon swimmer Guy Leech runs kayak and fitness sessions through his company Ozpaddle. Many sportspeople go to pasture once their competitive life is over. Some feel that years of sacrifice for their sport has earned them a break. Not Guy Leech!

At forty years of age, Guy has never looked better or been busier. He trains twice a day and his early morning sessions attract a mix of fitness fanatics.

He and his dog head to Manly's harbour beach at 6am and people start to turn up at around 6:20am. They hit the water and train for an hour.

At 8am training sessions incorporate a gruelling mix of surf ski paddling with soft sand running and a dose of stomach and core strength exercises thrown in. Then it's time for a guilt-free breakfast.

4:30pm is time for another bout of training. On Mondays and Wednesdays it involves weights sessions. Tuesdays and Thursdays Guy trains with a former world kickboxing champion. Each Friday it's a round of golf or a good run.

In between all of this activity, Guy runs a business and enjoys spending as much time with his family as he can.

At 6:30 each night, the phone is turned off and the Leech family switches off from the world.

Guy has four main areas in his life — relationships, health, spirituality and business. That combination really seems to be working for him!
