Minnamurra Rainforest

Thursday, June 16, 2005

Kiama is an easy drive from Sydney. Everyone loves to see the Blowhole as it shoots plumes of water when the seas are running south-east. It's spectacular when floodlit at night.

Bombo Headland, a blue-metal quarry in the 1880s, is now a wonderful moonscape of basalt walls and columns. Seven Mile Beach National Park is thickly vegetated and offers world-class windsurfing. Spring Creek Bird Hide and Barren Grounds Bird Observatory are beautiful places to explore and Carrington Falls is spectacular, dropping 50 metres into Kangaroo Valley.

Just 15 minutes away in Budderoo National Park is the Minnamurra Rainforest Centre, which is celebrating 100 years as a conservation reserve. It is rare to experience rainforest and a wide range of ferns in a sandstone canyon, once found extensively in the Illawarra region.

The fragile ecosystem can be accessed by a network of raised timber boardwalks and paved walk tracks. Visitors of all ages and abilities can readily access it and enjoy the wonderful array of birds which make Minnamurra their home.

The Rainforest Loop Walk is a 1.6km elevated timber boardwalk, meandering through subtropical and temperate rainforests. It takes around an hour to complete the walk.

Halfway round is a combination of timber boardwalk and paved surface leading to the Minnamurra Falls. The walk is about 2.5 kilometres, round trip.

Falls Walk is a challenging 2.6km boardwalk and paved track giving magnificent views into the canyon below. It leads onto the viewing platforms of the lower and upper falls. The songs of lyrebirds and laughter of kookaburras accompany you all the way through Minnamurra.

The Centre has a café serving light meals, snacks and refreshments and a barbecue/picnic area.

Cedar Mists Cottage is a wonderful place for a break from the city in summer or winter. On Jamberoo Mountain, it is just 20 minutes from Kiama, close to charming Berry in the Southern Highlands and a wonderful choice of beaches.

There is birdlife around all day — lyrebirds, whip-birds, kookaburras and bowerbirds are a common sight.

Cedar Mists has a full kitchen, gas barbecue, indoor/outdoor dining and all linen and towels are supplied. Two bedrooms have queen beds and the third has two king singles. There is a sofabed in the living room. It comfortably accommodates up to eight people.

Kiama, two hours south of Sydney.

Minnamurra Rainforest entry is $11 per vehicle. It is open between 9am and 5pm every day.

Cedar Mists Cottage starts at $340 a couple for a two-night stay.

Please note that the prices listed are valid at the time of filming.
