Kangaroo Valley Skyfarm

Thursday, November 4, 2004

Kangaroo Valley is first glimpsed after a winding drive through rainforest. It is quiet, peaceful and, some say, Australia's best-kept secret. It lies between the Shoalhaven Coast's white sands and the Southern Highlands. It offers rivers, rainforest, escarpment, bush, wildlife and a charming village.

Summer days are long and sunny and winter nights are just right for relaxing in front of an open fire.

Set amongst the hills is Skyfarm, an exclusive private haven. It has wonderful views across the Moreton National Park to Jervis Bay and a backdrop of rainforest. It is surrounded by pastures and native forest, the habitat of wombats, wallabies and lyrebirds.

The first thing visitors notice when they arrive at the 29ha property is the space and seclusion. It was rundown and rustic when its owners purchased it eight years ago. Over the years it has been renovated and a new lap pool added. (A family of wombats claimed the previous one as their home!)

A hamper of breakfast provisions welcomes visitors — juice, cereals, milk, bread and jams — and there is a good choice of cafes and restaurants in the village for other meals. Skyfarm does have barbecue facilities if you prefer to cook in.

The four bedrooms have ensuite facilities, thick towels and crisp linen. A choice of twin and king beds offers sleeping flexibility. There is a spacious day pavilion with sitting and dining areas and beautifully equipped kitchen. Quality china, glassware, cookware and modern appliances are included. Verandahs surround you and a breezeway cools the house in summer. In winter, stay warm with the wood-burning combustion fires in the day pavilion and oil-filled radiators in the bedrooms.

Skyfarm midweek prices start at $110 for eight guests, $140 for weekends per person. Other prices are available for less than eight guests.
Please note that the prices listed are valid at the time of filming.
