Tilba Tilba

Thursday, February 1, 2007

The romantic villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba on the south coast of NSW are protected by the Natural Trust. They are beautifully restored and maintained and surrounded by rolling countryside.

Central Tilba is the larger of the two and has many cafes and galleries featuring crafts, leatherwork, woodwork and cobbling. It has an old-fashioned general store, pub and post office. Delicious Tilba cheese is produced in the area and there are plenty of opportunities to sample local culinary delights.

The smaller village of Tilba Tilba to the south is also a charming place to visit with its cafes and gardens.

Foxglove Spires is a nursery with cafe, gift and antique shop snuggled under the shadow of Mt Dromedary/Gulaga. Its 100-year-old farm cottage is guarded by Norfolk Island pines and sits in 1.4 hectares of woodland garden with meandering walks, archways, hedges and masses of flowers. The open garden at Foxglove Spires is regarded as one of Australia's best.

Love at First Bite Cafe is perfect for a break during your wander around Foxglove Spires. They serve breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon tea every day. Cakes, sauces and dressings are made on the premises and visitors can buy jam, preserves and relish to take home.

Forget Me Not Gifts has a range of fabulous treasures. Choose something for the home, a collectible, maybe a locally crafted hat, sparkling jewellery or a sweet-smelling cream or lotion. Forget Me Not also offers a wonderful range of china and crystal, throw rugs, cushions, teddies and dolls and tempting accessories.

Looking for somewhere to stay? Try Green Gables, an historic National Trust B&B tucked away in a beautiful valley between the mountains and the sea. It has three large bedrooms with ensuite facilities, quality linen and furnishings and gourmet breakfast is included.

Originally a Temperance Hall, Green Gables was built in 1879 and is a local landmark. Guests enjoy views towards the coast from wide shady verandahs. It has central heating, a wood fire and ceiling fans. A delicious cooked breakfast is provided, dinner is by arrangement and there is a barbecue for guest use.

Five hours south of Sydney.

Foxglove Spires garden entry is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 concession and free for children under 12. Green Gables B&B costs $140 a night. Breakfast is included. Prices quoted are correct on February 1, 2007.
