Tandem hang glide

Thursday, January 10, 2002
Are you on the lookout for a new and daring, adrenaline-producing venture in Sydney? Well, we've found it!

Always on the lookout for a new and daring, adrenaline-producing venture, Getaway has found something exciting in Sydney.

Sydney Sky Sailors brought this style of hang-gliding from the United States where it has been operating for several years. They are the only operators in Australia offering "sky sailing", which is boat-launched tandem hang-gliding.

The advantage over conventional hang-gliding is that you don't need a hill or to rely on winds to be launched. That can become boring and time-consuming, waiting for the right currents and wind directions. Sky Sailing is said to be a lot easier, a lot safer and less scary than regular hang-gliding.

Its advantage over parasailing is that you have a feeling of more freedom as you actually get to fly free, rather than remain attached to the boat.

Here's how it goes. You are attached to your experienced instructor, and, for the duration of the flight, you will be flying face down. You take off from a platform at the back of a boat, and when the boat accelerates to about 50km/h, the hang-glider is lifted into the air.

When the glider reaches its maximum height — anywhere up to 600m — the instructor releases a winch line that connects the glider to the boat.

Then you fly free for up to half an hour. The length of time depends on the release height and amount of wind. If there is no wind, you will descend quite quickly, but with wind, you will have time to gently float towards the water.

Your instructor will let you take the controls, show you how to turn left and right and to control the speed through shifting your weight.

While you are up there, you will be able to enjoy the marvellous scenery of Sydney Harbour, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, the Pacific Ocean and Pittwater.

Those who have done it agree the feeling is powerful; one of freedom, and relaxation, with a therapeutic quality all at the one time.
