Charli Delaney's favourite place

Thursday, May 29, 2008
Charli Delaney was a performer with the extremely popular children's musical group Hi-5 for 10 years. Her bubbly personality, singing and dancing skills endeared her to thousands and thousands of littlies and, no doubt, they have all missed her since she moved on from Hi-5.

Charli is pursuing a new career and is studying at NIDA, hoping it will lead to challenging acting roles.

She recently took a break with Getaway and took us to her favourite place — Thredbo, in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains, a place she visited when she was a little girl. Charli grew up on the New South Wales coast, and visiting the mountains had a lasting impact on her.

Mount Kosciuszko is Australia's highest peak, standing at 2.2km above sea level. Europeans were the first to scale the mountain, with Polish explorer Paul Edmund Strzelecki naming the peak after its similarity to the tomb of the Polish general, Tadeusz Kosciuszko.

Kosciuszko National Park is one of the world's greatest national parks and apart from having Australia's highest mountains, it also has spectacular caves and limestone gorges, wonderful walks through alpine herb fields, excellent trout fishing and scenic drives to enjoy in spring, summer and autumn.

There are six wilderness areas, while its alpine and subalpine areas have plant species not found anywhere else in the world. The park is home to the rare mountain pygmy possum, corroboree frog and more than 200 species of birds.

The Kosciuszko Express Chairlift is 1.8km long and rises 560 vertical metres to an elevation of almost 2km. The ride takes around 15 minutes and offers spectacular valley views as you are lifted to the closest access point to Mt Kosciuszko. It's open 365 days a year between 9am and 4.30pm. In winter it is used as a chairlift for skiers.

A raised mesh walkway protecting native vegetation and preventing erosion takes you to the summit.

Reward yourself with a visit to Eagles Nest Restaurant, Australia's highest-eating venue. They serve breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner on Thursdays and Saturdays, year-round, accompanied by some of the best views in the world. Traditional mountain drinks such as hot chocolate, schnapps and gluhwein are guaranteed to warm you up.

The Thredbo Bobsled is a 700m luge-style track, twisting and turning its way down the mountain while you control the speed with a brake. It travels at a maximum speed of 35km/h and there is room for one passenger, or an adult and small child.

Bernti's Mountain Inn in the heart of the village is family-owned and acclaimed for its grill and tapas bar. Its signature drink is schnapps, enjoyed by an open fire in winter or on the patio in summer.

Bernti's has 30 comfortable rooms, some with mountain views.

Thredbo Valley Distillery is where Australian culture meets European tradition. Schnapps has been distilled in ski areas in Europe for many years and Brad Spalding produces the finest schnapps to rival Europe's best.

The distillery cellar door and cafe open year-round and a full range of schnapps is kept on ice ready for tasting. The range is diverse — lots of fruit flavours, chilli and butterscotch. They also serve delicious coffee and cake.

Heli Surveys oeprate scenic flights throughout the year over the Mt Kosciuszko National Park in a Bell Jet Ranger. Floating over Lake Crackenback, Charlotte Pass, Blue Lake, Lake Albina and Hedley Tarn gives you a magnificent view of the amazing beauty of the area in the most exciting way.

Scenic Chairlift Rides start at $20.50 for adults and $12 for children one way.

The Thredbo Bobsled rides cost $6 for one and $29 for six. They operate from 10am to 5pm, seven days a week in warm months, weather permitting.

Bernti's Mountain Inn bed and breakfast is $120 per person a night in summer and $220 per person for two nights in winter.
