Byron Horses

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

This beautiful part of New South Wales is known for its little townships, superb beaches and large, beautiful headland.

Cape Byron Seahorses Riding Centre has been operating in the Byron and Ballina shire since 1990. It offers trail and beach rides, children's and cart rides along the beaches or rolling hills of the hinterland. Some couples have even tied the knot on the trail rides!

Owner/operator, Jo-Ann Allchin's 150ha property, Forest Ranch, is home to 24 horses including thoroughbreds, brumbies, stock and quarter horses and Shetland ponies. She has also given a second chance to former racing horses which were to be slaughtered.

Every horse has a name and Jo-Ann knows them all by their "neigh".

Beach rides take place mornings or afternoons on Seven Mile Beach at Lennox Head. Compared to the usually busy Byron Bay it is a quiet and pristine experience. After 90 minutes, saddles are removed, riders enjoy platters of tropical fruits and then ride their horses into the surf, something enjoyed by all concerned. Sometimes there is the added bonus of watching frolicking dolphins offshore.

After the swim everyone tucks into a sausage sizzle and marinated prawns.

Seahorses Riding Centre caters for all levels of riding skills, and children are particularly taken care of.
