An out-of-Sydney bush and beach escape

Friday, June 10, 2011
If you've ever driven north of Sydney and crossed the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn, you will have seen the beauty of the area, including sparkling waters, lots of bush and a sprinkling of islands. Maybe you've thought you would like to go there one day.

Well, Catriona Rowntree took the exit off the F3 into the hamlet of Brooklyn for fish and chips at JJ's Café. She'd been there before and was ready to go again! You can also buy oysters straight from the shucker.

Brooklyn is the launch point for a Hawkesbury River holiday. There are places to rent and it's the ideal spot for a family break or a romantic getaway.

For something a little more out of the way, Catriona headed to Little Wobby Beach, a tiny community opposite Brooklyn and Dangar Islands. It has around 100 homes and weekenders clinging to a sandstone outcrop.

She'd been to The Boathouse around 10 years ago and wanted to check it out again as the venue for a future Rowntree family get-together. It still ticks all the boxes.

The six-bedroom, tri-level waterfront house was built in 1987 and comfortably sleeps 12 guests. Each room has a spa bath. The kitchen is large enough to cater for hungry hordes but if you want a real break, some of Sydney's best seafood can be delivered to the door by Life Boat Seafood. If you've had some luck with the fishing line, there is a barbecue.

There are two decks, an indoor pool and spa and another spa on the roof. Relax in the library or have a game of billiards.

While it's part of the mainland, Little Wobby has no vehicle access. There are water taxis and The Boathouse has a mooring.

The Boathouse costs $300 a couple per night with a minimum of four couples and a two nights. Children must be older than 14 years.

Prices correct at June 11, 2011.
