Stoney Park

Thursday, February 14, 2008
Port Macquarie, on the Hastings River, is a large town on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. The site was first visited by Europeans in 1820 and was developed, initially, as a penal settlement.

These days it is a popular retirement location and tourist destination. It has pristine beaches and untouched waterways. The town centre has plenty of shops and malls and several interesting historic buildings.

Just north of Port, at Telegraph Point, is Stoney Park, a fantastic holiday park and water sports complex.

It was all the brainchild of Jason Stone, a former Australian water ski team member who has been competing and coaching for 17 years. His dream was to create a paradise for skiers and wake boarders in this beautiful region, and he has done just that.

He still skis at a competitive level, plus oversees day-to-day operations and heads up the team.

Stoney Park offers a wide range of accommodation. Lakeview Lodge has two-bedrooms and is self-contained. Deluxe Villas and two-bedroom Family Cabins are also self-contained. The Bunkhouse has three dormitory rooms sleeping up to four, and there are powered and camp sites.

Stoney Park has two man-made lakes, purpose-built for waterskiing and wakeboarding. They were built at right-angles to each other to get the best use of sun and wind. They are 720 metres long, 60-80 metres wide and range from 1.l5 to 1.8 metres deep.

Both lakes are equipped with surveyed slalom courses and jump to cater for all skiing requirements. Spectators were also considered during planning. The Front Lake has a range of sliders and kickers for all levels of wakeboarders.

Lessons are available year-round, catering from beginners to professionals.

4½ hours north of Sydney.

Stoney Park 20-minute waterski and wakeboard lessons start at $55 per person. Campsites start at $18 a night and cabins start at $75 a night.
