Soldiers Point Holiday Park

Thursday, April 18, 2002
Ben visits Port Stephens, north of Sydney, and shows us why it is such a popular holiday spot.

Port Stephens is about 2.5 times the size of Sydney Harbour and has a wonderful range of beaches and bays and natural beauty. It is a vast sheltered bay occupying a submerged valley stretching 20kms inland.

Its largest town is Nelson Bay. Nearby areas like Anna Bay, One Mile Beach, Shoal Bay, Hawks Nest, Lemon Tree Passage, the Stockton Sand Dunes and Soldiers Point are less commercialised but are all popular holiday and retirement destinations.

Soldiers Point is on the peninsula and has no through traffic, so the Holiday Park is peaceful. It is about 15 minutes easy drive from Nelson Bay and covers 2.2 hectares. It is popular with families, honeymooners, fishermen and those just wanting a good, quiet break.

It is one of four holiday parks owned by the Port Stephens Council and a recent addition of 15 self-contained villas gives holidaymakers the choice between staying indoors or at one of the 80 campsites. The amenities have recently been given a facelift, and new roads and landscaping have been added.

The park has a very friendly atmosphere, is right on the water and the villas are set in natural bush with an incline ensuring all have a water view.

Each villa has two bedrooms, one queen and one double with a bunk bed. They have reverse-cycle air-conditioning, private deck with furniture, full-size kitchen, bathroom, television, cable television and video.

There are barbecues areas for you to cook up your daily catch, but if you want to get away from preparing meals, there is a seafood restaurant on the marina, just metres from the park.

There is a tennis court, ample boat parking, movie, trivia and bingo nights, and most people get a real kick out of watching and feeding the local pelicans.

Soldiers Point Holiday Park has powered camp and van sites starting from $19 and self-contained villas from $79.
