North Coast Surfing

Thursday, September 28, 2000
Every surfer's dream... Hop on a bus and head to northern NSW, stopping at the best beaches the coast has to offer, and if the surf's up, just hang 10.

Nat and Dan are living every surfer's dream. They used to work in the building trade but have turned their favourite pastime of surfing into a business.

The Aussie Surf Adventures bus leaves Sydney on most Mondays from September to June, heading north at a relaxed pace and stopping at the best beaches the coast has to offer. If the surf looks good, they set up camp for the night.

Most of the surfers are international backpackers — Dutch, German and Swiss, with some Americans and Canadians. Aussie Surf Adventures' accredited surf coaches make sure that all surfers, from beginners to experts, get safe, one-on-one advice and training. They choose the right board for the right person and teach how to read the ocean and how to use rips and tides to advantage.

Every day offers activities other than riding the waves — snorkelling, boogie boarding, touch football, jetskiing, eating, snoozing or just sun baking.

All meals are included in the price: three meals a day, with dinner around a campfire or a barbecue.

Wednesday is the big day of the trip. It's the day they arrive in Crescent Head. At 7pm the party starts at the Crescent Head Tavern, a surfie institution filled with memorabilia. After dinner and a few games of pool, the bus heads back to the campsite, the fire is stoked up and the party continues until early morning. Nat and Dan are up early to prepare a big breakfast, and for some, a swim is just what the doctor ordered.

The journey ends in Byron Bay on Friday afternoon, and you are almost guaranteed of having had good waves every day. The route takes in so many beaches on the way that if there is no surf at one, it's a simple matter of driving till you find a good spot.
