Wine tasting

Hunter Valley by air

Thursday, June 10, 2004
Natalie takes a dinner delight by flight tour and does a little bit of wine tasting in the Hunter Valley.

The Hunter Valley is the perfect getaway. But if you feel you've "been there done that", how about this new option: contact Australia by Air and fly to the Hunter in a Cessna 310 from Bankstown.

Ben Bowley came up with the idea a couple of years ago when he was flying west with a friend. He thought the scenic flight would be ideal for Sydneysiders and tourists keen to visit the popular wine area.

A Hunter Delight itinerary begins at Bankstown Airport and heads over the Sydney Olympic site, Pittwater, Lion Island and Central Coast beaches. You then head west of Lake Macquarie, Australia's largest saltwater lake, and further inland to the Hunter Valley. This is all done at 150 metres over water and 300 metres over land. Everyone has a window seat, so no-one misses out on the marvellous views.

Guests are met by a local guide and taken the short distance to Pepper Tree Winery, where they enjoy a private wine tasting accompanied by tasty canapés. One of the Hunter Valley's showplaces, Pepper Tree is a combination of vineyards, deluxe guesthouse, the acclaimed Robert's Restaurant and small meeting facilities.

At Roberts Restaurant you will be served a three-course a la carte meal. It's just a short walk through the gardens of the beautiful 1850s vintage Pepper Tree cottage. Some people go to the Hunter purely to enjoy Robert's cuisine. He has blended his Italian/French heritage with Australian influences and grows much of the produce he uses in the cottage garden.

After the meal, guests are, mostly reluctantly, driven to the airport for the flight back to Sydney.

But the blow of leaving is softened by the magnificent Sydney night lights as you fly over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
