Spend the day in the Hunter Valley, have a sip and relax … all you need is a driver.
The Hunter Valley is NSW's most prolific wine producing area. There are 94 cellar doors to choose from and what they have to offer is first class by world standards.
Heather Jefferys has an excellent knowledge of wine from the vine to the bottle. She loves the Hunter Valley and always wanted her own business with a difference hence Pick of the Crop Wine Expeditions.
Heather wanted a vehicle with a difference, too, and after much searching, found an Australian-built 1960 Pontiac Laurentian. Sophia, as Heather has named the car, is a classic and still has its original V8 283 horsepower engine. The interior has been restored and extra padding added to the seats. Sophia is seven metres long, so has plenty of leg room and the boot can easily take at least nine boxes of wine.
Heather offers half day and full day tours of the valley. A day tour can start with breakfast, but if you prefer a later start, you will be given a choice of where you would like to have lunch.
The Hunter vintage starts in the last week of January, and by mid-February is in full swing until the end of April. Before picking, the fruit's sugar level is checked and then it's chaotic.
The instant the fruit is removed from the vine it begins to oxidise, so getting the process started immediately is critical.
Winemakers are always happy to impart knowledge about the process of producing quality red and white wine, and some places allow a quick look at what goes on behind the scenes.
If you are spending a few days in the Hunter Valley, you may like to consider a visit to Wollombi or the historic towns of Branxton and Morpeth.
