The Myall Lakes National Park is 31,600 hectares of headland, forests, swamplands, forest fringes and 10,000 hectares of shark-free coastal lagoons. The lagoons Myall Lake, Boolambyte Lake, Two Mile Lake and The Broadwater are linked by narrow straits forming a waterway joined to Port Stephens by the lower Myall River.
The coast has 40kms of almost unbroken beaches and, between the ocean and the lakes, there are sand dunes with varied vegetation. This combination provides one of Australia's largest and most complex lake systems, created after the last Ice Age, when sea levels rose and flooded the coastal land. Melaleuca trees that are up to 300-years-old give the lakes a tea colour.
The area was famously saved from developers and sand miners in a long battle during the 1960s and 70s. There are also middens left from the time the area was inhabited by the Birpai and Worimi tribes. They left when white settlement began in the mid-19th century and boatbuilding and timber cutting industries were established.
Luxury Houseboats offer active or lazy trips on Myall Lakes. Imagine looking from your porthole every morning to see unspoilt wilderness and flocks of cockatoos, magpies and rainbow lorikeets flying by.
The most pressing part of the day is deciding over breakfast just what to do. Swimming, snorkelling, skiing, canoeing, kayaking, sailboarding, fishing at one of the anchorages or bushwalking are some of the choices.
Luxury Houseboats have one 9.4-metre fly bridge 2-4 berth cruiser, three 10-metre 2-6 berth houseboats and four 13-metre 4-10 berth houseboats.
They are purposely built fibreglass boats with simple controls requiring no experience or licence. A full briefing is provided.
They have a gas stove with four burners, oven and grill, refrigerator and freezer, large built-in ice boxes, galley stocked with crockery, cutlery, glassware and kitchenware and a stainless steel barbecue. There is fresh water for kitchen and showering, outdoor furniture, maps and manuals.
All outside decks are carpeted and have safety rails, and full safety equipment is loaded.
For shore excursions there is a dinghy supplied free of charge and there is an outboard motor for hire if you prefer.
