Hawkesbury Houseboat

Thursday, November 1, 2001
How does taking a leisurely cruise along the Hawkesbury with some friends sound? Fun, huh!

Taking a leisurely cruise along the Hawkesbury, Colo and Macdonald rivers with 11 pals is a pretty appealing thought.

Darren and Kellianne Osmotherly's business, Paradise Afloat Houseboats, are available for long- and short-term hire, with a minimum time of four hours and a maximum of seven days. You need to take supplies with you, but replenishments can be delivered to you while you're on the river.

Darren designed and built their first houseboat, and there is another on the way. It's a Capricorn 2000, which is 15m long and seven metres wide and powered by two 40hp Yamaha outboards. It travels along at eight knots.

There are three bedrooms that are able to sleep up to 12 people, a lounge area and bathroom. A CD player, television, video and barbecue are supplied, the kitchen is fully self-contained. You need to take food, drink, toiletries, towels and CDs. There is a swim deck and a dinghy with a 2hp motor, as well as an electronic anchor winch.

Darren and Kellianne have done much fundraising work for Camp Quality, a charitable organisation that does wonderful things for children with cancer.

As a result of a childhood illness and his exposure to Camp Quality, Darren designed his craft with disabled people in mind.

Among the features included on the boat are a lower helm for driving, an electronic anchor winch, a large bathroom, handrails, a wide door and hallways. The swim deck can also be submerged, making it easier for swimmers to enter the water, instead of having to use steps or a ladder.

There's plenty to do and see with golf courses along the way, the historic town of Windsor — which is a charming place to find your land-legs — plus you can cruise along as far as Berowra Waters. You will find an itinerary book on board recommending restaurants and other stops along the way.

A boat licence is not needed to cruise with Paradise Afloat. You will be given simple instructions and then you can just relax by swimming, fishing, cruising and generally taking in the Australian bush — so near to the city, yet so far.

Lower Portland, two hours from Sydney.
