Elsewhere Retreat

Thursday, September 22, 2005

Elsewhere Retreat sits in splendid isolation on 16 hectares in the Megalong Valley. The four-bedroom architect-designed house is in the classic Australian style. The western red cedar building has wrap-around verandahs, cathedral ceilings, an open fireplace and large windows with views of the escarpment, native bush and rolling hills. You won't see another building from Elsewhere.

The comfortable house has all amenities and modern furnishings — you and up to seven other people just need to think about your food and drinks and enjoy the surroundings. They can even arrange a visit from a beautician if you feel like some extra pampering.

The kitchen has modern European stainless steel appliances, a large refrigerator and dishwasher. There is an espresso coffee-making machine, good quality crockery, cutlery and plenty of glassware. There is a selection of recipe books and condiments, copper-based pans and loads of platters and bowls. The owners can put you in touch with local caterers if you want a break from the kitchen.

For summer dining, you have a seven-burner barbecue and large outdoor setting with market umbrella.

The verandah has deck chairs and a hammock for warm days. The only sound is fish darting around in the pond and you will probably see kangaroos, echidnas and wombats.

In winter, when the mountain weather is crisp, you can relax in the open-plan living room which has a wonderful open fireplace — chopped wood is provided. There is also a slow-burning wood combustion fire, so the entire house is toasty warm. Imagine curling up in a leather sofa getting lost in the views of the Kanimbla Valley.

Three bedrooms have queen beds and the other has two single beds which can be clipped together to make a king bed. All have electric blankets, crisp white linen and woollen doonas. A cot and highchair can be provided if needed. All rooms have oil heaters and ceiling fans.

There are two bathrooms, one with bath, shower, toilet, vanity and heating. The other is a two-way ensuite with shower, toilet, vanity and heating. There is also a full laundry.

There is an Austar television connection, VHS, CD, tape, tuner stereo system, CDs, videos and board games.

Elsewhere is close to the World-Heritage-listed Blue Mountains. Bushwalking is very rewarding and there are countless places for a private picnic.

Elsewhere has four mountain bikes, helmets and water bottles. Most people enjoy a ride to Chaplow Creek which wanders through the property.

A two-hour drive from Sydney.

Elsewhere Retreat costs $800 a weekend for four people.

Please note that the prices listed are valid at the time of filming.
