Macquarie Waters

Thursday, June 19, 2008
Port Macquarie is both a wonderful holiday destination and a great stop-over spot when travelling between Sydney and Brisbane.

It was established in 1821 and is one of the oldest penal settlements outside of Sydney. Many early structures still stand and the town has interesting museums and interpretive centres.

Port Macquarie is situated between the mouth of the Hastings River and the Pacific Ocean. It has 15 beaches, most of them patrolled, many with barbecue facilities and playgrounds. It's a real gem for lovers of water sports and those who enjoy getting close to nature. There are plenty of opportunities for sailing, swimming, surfing, fishing, bush walking and exploring the hinterland.

The town is known for its koala population and is home to the Billabong Koala Park and Hospital which cares for animals injured by such things as bushfire, dog attacks and vehicle accidents.

The town has many accommodation options, and Getaway has discovered Macquarie Waters, a family-friendly 4.5 star property offering 49 motel rooms and one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Some apartments have spas or ocean views from balconies.

There is a heated pool, heated outdoor spa, barbecues, hammocks, guest roof deck with wonderful views and the highly rated Corner Restaurant.

The restaurant has glass doors opening to a sunny terrace and serves a Mediterranean-influenced menu of handmade pizzas, antipasto, seafood and a tempting array of desserts. It is fully-licensed and there are around 15 wines to buy by the glass.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant, and coffee and fresh bakery items are available all day.

For a really different night at the movies, the Dive In Theatre is the place to go. You can sit in the pool or on lounges and sun beds to enjoy the latest movies, and even have food delivered from the restaurant.

The movie is projected on a white wall and runs on weekends and almost every night during school holidays.

It's all a stroll from the centre of Port Macquarie and a five-minute walk from Town Beach.
