Lunch at Smokehouse Cafe

Smokehouse Café

Thursday, October 17, 2002
Just 15 minutes from the centre of Canberra is the rural village of Hall. This is where the Smokehouse Café is located, on a fine-wool merino property.

The stylish and unpretentious café is a beautifully-restored weatherboard farm cottage which was built sometime around the 1930s.

Sue and Robert Bruce own Poachers Pantry, a gourmet smoked-meat manufacturer. They opened the café, tasting room and cellar door in September this year. They have run the pantry for 11 years and such eminent chefs as Stephanie Alexander, Andrew Blake and Tetsuya have featured their products on its menus. They have also been used in the kitchens of governors-general and prime ministers and served to visiting dignitaries.

Obviously the Smokehouse menu features their own products, such as smoked chicken, quail, lamb, pork, kangaroo and emu, but there are plenty of other dishes to choose from. Smoked lamb racks on garlic and potato mash or warm salad of smoked duck breast with walnuts and orange are delicious alternatives.

The approach to the café is a beautiful one, driving through their vineyard, past grazing sheep, and the Tasting Bar is usually the first stop. Here you can try different morsels, select free recipe cards and taste some local wine.
