Flight to Malolo.
Malolo Plantation Lodge.
Black sand beaches.
The most popular location in Papua New Guinea for divers is Madang Province, with its reef-fringed lowlands, offshore volcanic islands and a backdrop of the country's most rugged mountains.
Clear water gives excellent visibility, making diving good year round, with many easily-accessible places. The clarity of the water makes it just as good for snorkellers. There's an abundance of reef and pelagic fish, dramatic drop-offs, shells and soft and hard corals.
The coastline is dotted with emerald islands and calm lagoons, perfect for exploring by kayak.
Wreck divers will find the reefs liberally stocked with sunken ships. Hansa Bay is the resting place for at least 34 Japanese ships from World War II and is within easy reach up the coast. The wrecks lie in shallow water and are covered in corals and fish.
Game fishing is a popular sport. The currents provide sailfish, kingfish, tuna, mackerel, barracuda, marlin, yellow fish and wahoo within 100 metres of the shore.
Manam and Karkar are two volcanic islands with cones rising 1800 metres above sea level, providing a spectacular sight.
Local markets sell artefacts, shell jewellery, carvings and pottery. Tours to villages where clay pots are made can be arranged and there are harbour cruises, jungle walks and hot springs to enjoy.
The picture-perfect place to stay is Malolo Plantation Lodge, in an ideal tropical setting, complete with swaying palms and the volcanic island of Kar Kar on the horizon.
It has 14 air-conditioned rooms, each with private bathroom and a balcony facing the ocean. The lounge, bar and dining room are open on all sides to take advantage of cool breezes. There is a freshwater swimming pool, tennis court, lush tropical gardens, vast lawns reaching the ocean, dive facilities and sea kayaking. Electricity comes from the town power supply, but can be unreliable. Not to worry, however, as they have a generator for such times. Besides, candlelight is just right for your surroundings!
