Art attack: inside Australia's artiest escapes

15:00 AEST Fri Sep 9 2011
Catriona and Jason set out to get their creative juices flowing — Catriona on the outskirts of South Australia's Barossa Valley and Jason in the hinterland behind Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Kapunda Artist Trail, South Australia

Kapunda was established in 1842 when copper deposits were discovered. These days, the town of around 3000 is known for its vibrant art culture.

The creative melting pot is just an hour from Adelaide and the trail, followed by a map from the Kapunda Visitor Information Centre.

Catriona joined Jacqueline Coates, one of the extraordinarily talented painters in the area. Her love of beauty and grandeur is reflected in her bold, floral paintings, particularly roses. She has also captured the Barossa Farmers' Markets and the Italian landscape in her works you will see at her gallery, Salon Rouge, a renovated workshop.

Her passion for teaching has helped hundreds of people produce wonderful results. She has a compassionate and non-stressful strategy, resulting in confidence and results from students who range from absolute beginners to experienced painters who may have become a little rusty. She uses classical techniques combined with thoughtful shortcuts to achieve the wanted results. Weather permitting, workshops are held in the landscapes students are creating.

Quite understandably, word of Jacqueline's talents have spread far and wide. She teaches in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Grafton, Port Lincoln and Wellington, New Zealand. Spend time with Jacqueline and it could bring your unrecognised talents to the surface!

Little Glory Gallery was another Catriona visited. It started out in 2000 in the former Primitive Methodist, then St Paul's Lutheran Church which was known locally as 'Little Glory'.

Resident artists BJ Moore and Carmine Lake work in a broad array of styles, techniques and materials, covering a wide range of subjects. Flora, street scenes, landscapes, the human figure, birds and animals in oils or acrylics, pastel, charcoal and mixed media. They are also experts in engravings, photograph and computer-modified digital images. They can be commissioned to create your requirements. Little Glory also has a framing service to protect and display works at their best.

There's a double treat at Little Glory. They also have a succulent nursery and display garden.

The Arthouse

Relax and create in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, 30 minutes from Noosa. As Jason discovered, The Arthouse is much more than just a great place to stay. It's where you can relax and be inspired to create.

Nestled in over 10 hectares of rainforest, it's the perfect place to catch up on your reading, taking in views to the coast or do as Jason did and take part in an exclusive art class with private tutor.

Owner Martin Duncan has cleverly blended his two passions at The Arthouse — cooking and art. Arthouse is a one-bedroom studio with artworks to stimulate, and easels and art supplies to get you going. Private tutors and group lessons are a phone call away if you require guidance.

Terry Boudin is one of those tutors to guide you to creating your very own holiday masterpiece. She specialises in drawing, painting and sculptural ceramics.

The Escape House is tucked away on the same property. It is luxurious and has three bedrooms and a gourmet kitchen. Both Escape and Arthouse have log fires, soft bedding, stone baths and long decks.

Cooking classes are held in the beautiful outdoor kitchen next to the property's herb garden and orchard. There is also a plunge pool with outdoor beanbags and sun lounges.

Celebrity chefs and master chefs from around the country join local chefs to showcase local ingredients to take you on an unforgettable experience in the most sublime surroundings.
