Sun City - or maybe that should be Fun City. This place is simply amazing. Lochie shows you around the Palace of the Lost City.
Sun City was the first to open in 1979, at the same time as the 55,000-hectare Pilanesburg National Park Game Reserve. The area now has three million visitors a year who enjoy the luxurious amenities, theme park attractions and casinos. It is a maze of winding lagoons, cascading waterfalls and walkways fringed with palms and ferns.
The Palace of the Lost City is in the heart of the resort and offers 24 hours of fun and entertainment with gaming tables, live shows, cinemas, games, restaurants, bars and shops. The majestic entrance has arches of faux elephant tusks, balustrades of bronze and crystal, fantasy jungles spilling across tiled floors, frescoed ceilings and furnishings fit for a king.
The legend goes: a tribe from northern Africa brought their proud traditions of mighty architecture, luxurious hospitality and love of nature to an ancient volcanic crater they called Valley of the Sun.
"An earthquake ruined the magnificent city they had created and forced the people to flee, but today it has been 'discovered' and 'restored' to its former splendour as the Lost City at Sun City."
Appealing to any standard of golfer are two 18-hole championship courses, one of which was designed by Gary Player. On the 13th hole of the Lost City course lives a Nile crocodile named Footloose. He's a big fellow, weighing in at one tonne!
The Valley of Waves is a free attraction where you can swim, surf, ride a tube on the 1.8m high waves or sunbake on the white sand beach. It is an ideal place for families, and if you want some time to yourself, Kamp Kwena will look after and occupy the children for hours.
The Cascades opened in 1984 and is set in four hectares of garden. It has two restaurants, two bars, a large pool and 7,740 square metres of water features.
The Cabanas has 380 rooms, three restaurants, two bars and a huge array of activities. It is the most relaxed and casual of the hotels and offers informal, comfortable accommodation with direct access into the tropical gardens.
When you have enjoyed all the things your hotel has to offer, a game-viewing excursion in the adjoining Pilanesburg National Park is just the thing. Your concierge will be able to advise you about this.
