Jules in LA

, Prev Next

I've always had a love affair with Los Angeles, I think because it was the first overseas place I went to as a 19-year-old backpacker. Me and my mate had planned an eight month trip, and LA was our very first stop. I remember getting off the plane and completely freaking out. We had no idea where we were staying that night, so we caught a random bus in the direction of the only place we could remember the name of — Venice Beach.

So now I got to return, 11 years later, with Getaway,a bit older, not much wiser but still on a backpackers' budget! And what I learnt when I was 19 still stands now — LA is one of the easiest places on the planet to be entertained for free. Don't spend too much money on your hotel room, you just don't need to. Stay somewhere like Hotel California on Venice Beach, walk out the door and walk into an open air circus. Spend 20 bucks, get a lowrider bike from Perry's bike hire and cruise around on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Everything you'll see is larger than life, from the hamburgers to the characters on the strip.

I learnt an important lesson the first night — if a man comes up to you on the street and says that for five bucks, he can tell you your birthday to within three days, and where you got your shoes from — don't give it to him! I thought it sounded likeit was worth it, gave him my five bucks, and he said "You were born on Wednesday" and "Where you got your shoes? On yer feet, sucker!" and off he went!

This time, as I was cruising on my lowrider, I drove past a busker wearing absolutely nothing but a leopardskin g-string and holding a rubber snake. So I gave him a pinch on the bum, and he got MASSIVELY offended and went on about how I'd degraded him. While standing on the street in a g-string, holding a snake…

My best LA on the cheap tip is to get tickets for a show taping. On this trip, we went to Jay Leno and Roseanne Barr. Get up early, and work out which shows are being taped — then go out the front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard and see if you can get tickets. Once you're in there, stick your hand up and get up on stage. You've gotta put it out there while you're in LA: just be open to possibilities every day and I guarantee, you'll have so many crazy stories to tell when you get home.
