Dermott does the desert

, Prev Next

G'day, guys! Well, no rest for the wicked ... on Monday I'm off on my very first trip to Jordan. I'm really excited because it sounds like a truly magical place.

My first piece there is going to be on the old stone kingdom of Petra. It's one of the 'new' wonders of the world, but was built in 100BCE, so it doesn't sound too new to me! The place has been described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" — can you imagine? I'm looking forward to learning more about its history, and about all of the different cultures Petra's been influenced by.

Now, the second story in Jordan really is right up my street. I'm going to head out into the desert and live like a nomadic tribesman! I absolutely love this stuff — seven-star hotels are great, but zero-star camping under infinite stars sounds out of this world. A Bedouin experience will hopefully give me a bit of insight into how these people live under some pretty harsh conditions.

After Jordan, I'm popping over to the Greek isles ... as you do. This'll be my first time there at the age of 44. Most of my mates have been, but the Greek summer didn't ever fit into my sport schedule, so I'm really excited to see if it's as beautiful as it is in all of their photos — you know the ones, with the whitewashed houses with bright blue rooves and an azure sea? Some scenic time, coupled with a bit of cheap ouzo, will hopefully be a great reward after a long trip overseas.

Keep watching, and I'll be back to check in with you on my return.

Dermott must be the best presenter ever. His easy going manner, sense of humour, very natural overall demanour. I don't watch the show religously, but every time I watch it, I am delighted by his way of presenting it. Cheers, tk
God to see you on the Zuiderdam cruising the Alaska coast line and glaciers. My wife managed to get a photo of you and her on the ship. She also got some great shots of Glacier Bay
