Overseas hotel rates

Thursday, March 11, 2004
A popular question is about booking your accommodation here or when you get there?

We received an e-mail from Kim Vo, who is planning a trip to Asia and wants to know if it's cheaper to book hotels through a travel agent in Australia or wait until she arrives at her destination.

If you are planning to stay in a big chain hotel, you're probably better off booking a package through a travel agent in Australia. Travel wholesalers are able to get cheaper rates because they buy rooms in such huge volumes.

An advantage of paying for your hotel before you leave is that you pay in Australian dollars and won't have to worry if our dollar takes a dive while you're away.

If you're after a smaller hotel, chances are you will have more negotiating power once you're there, especially off-season.

No matter what type of hotel you choose, it's always a good idea to cross-check prices on the hotel's website and see if they have any online discounts.

Two other websites worth looking at are lastminute.com.au and wotif.com. They offer last-minute deals on international hotels.
