Camp Counsellors

Thursday, March 6, 2003
If you want to know more about becoming a USA Camp Counsellor, Catriona has the answers.

Robert Tyman has always wanted to go to summer camp in the United States, just to see if it's just as good as it looks in the movies … you know, the century-old tradition where every summer millions of American children pack their bags to go off to camp for nine weeks.

Most camps are in beautiful rural areas where campers join activities, sports, games and avoiding poison ivy in the great outdoors. Energetic adults supervise campers and other energetic adults work behind-the-scenes and all are placed at a camp which matches their personality, skills and interests.

CCUSA has been the summer camp specialist since 1986 and places around 2000 Australians in a thousand different camps across the United States every year.

You need to pay your airfare and program fees of around $750 — and be prepared to put in some long hours. But they do say they will reward you with the summer of your life, meals, basic accommodation and up to US$1450 pocket money for the duration of your stay.

To apply you need to be between 18 and 30 years old, available to work for nine to 11 weeks between June and August and, of course, like working with children.
