Drive aways

Peter Davis from Brisbane wants to know about driving across America without it costing too much.

Peter Davis from Brisbane has e-mailed the Getaway office wanting to know about driving across America without it costing too much.

Well, Peter, you came to the right place. We happen to know how you can travel in the United States and Canada without it costing you a cent in car hire.

Here's how it works. You use a drive-away company. They get you to do their delivery work, taking vehicles from A to B, on behalf of a third party who just doesn't want to or hasn't the time to drive. You can travel between most major cities in North America.

The use of the car is free — what you need to do is pay for the fuel and leave a deposit of about $US300, which is returned to you when the job is done.

You need to be flexible with your destinations, you have to follow a certain route and be there within a specified time. You must also be at least 21 years of age, have a clean driving record and a current international driver's licence. If you fit the bill you can slip behind the wheel, but don't forget — it's on the left hand side!

Auto Drive-Aways is one of the largest companies in the United States and Canada offering this service. For more information: autodriveaway.com, or for alternatives, look up "auto transporters" in the local Yellow Pages when you arrive.
