Want to know more about taking the pooch and puss on holidays?

There's no doubt that we live in a society of animal lovers. So many people write to the Getaway office asking where they can go on a holiday and not have the wrench of putting their pet into a boarding kennel or cattery.

There are tons of options and it's surprising just how many places welcome the extra member to enjoy the holiday with the family.

We refer people to two books which are put out by the "Life. Be in it" organisation. Holidaying with Dogs and Holidaying with Cats are well-researched little books which list pet-friendly accommodation options across Australia and New Zealand. Instead of stars, they are graded with paws — but the critters don't mind if they aren't at a five-paw establishment, just as long as they are included.

If your holiday involves a domestic flight, it's easy to take your friend with you. Most airlines allow you to simply check your pet in as excess luggage and collect him at the other end.

You can hire a proper container from carriers such as Dogtainers. If you are concerned about how your pet will handle the journey, put something familiar such as a toy or blanket in the container.

You should check with your airline for further details about pet flying.
