Working in the UK

Get the tips and hints on working in the UK.

A couple of weeks ago we answered a viewer's query about overseas working visas. Since then another viewer has asked us for more information about working in the United Kingdom. Rodney Lane is about to join around 50,000 other Australians in the UK on working holiday visas and there is an organisation he should contact.

1st Contact is a London- based company with an office in Melbourne. They give advice on finding work and accommodation, information about the taxation system, setting up a bank account before you leave home and anything else you may need assistance with.

A magazine called TNT is an absolute must. Every week it lists hundreds of jobs and gives websites for most. A book titled Working in London and the UK is also very useful to help put you on the right track.

If you are lucky enough to have a parent or grandparent who was born in the UK you may be able to work there for up to four years or better still, apply for a British passport and work there as long as you like. Contact the British Embassy for more information.

If you are eligible for a passport for any other EU country, you will be able to work in Britain indefinitely.

1st Contact: Level 3, 150 Queen Street, Melbourne 3000.
